Buck 65
In a time when popular hip-hop artists seem reluctant to tap anything other than old, sped-up soul samples for their beats (thanks Kanye), Buck 65 lives up to his reputation as a true experimental rapper. On 2007’s Situation (based on cultural events from the year 1957), the Canadian MC utilizes a rich variety of pre-1960 piano and guitar samples, giving the album a stripped-down, organic feel that interacts well with Buck’s backwoods-drawl delivery. Perhaps the best example of this is “The Outskirts,” which uses the traditional classical-guitar piece “Romance d’Amour” as backing—an idea so natural and fresh it’s a wonder no one thought of it before. Buck has been relatively quiet since Situation, emerging only to self-release a handful of home recordings in 2008.
