On Cage’s new album, Depart From Me, the beats resemble a beatdown, and few would mistake the omnipresent distorted guitars for anything off of Licensed To Ill. The New York rapper, who’s been peddling rhymes for almost two decades now, made his name with harrowing tales of a broken adolescence: a father with a penchant for acts of unspeakable violence, a series of long-term hospitalizations, and a drug-derailed stab at a major-label recording career. Depart From Me is Cage’s third album and his second for the Definitive Jux label, where his angry—but always immaculately composed—style has finally found a happy (or at least fitting) home.
