Artist Cait And The Girls

The quietly confident soul in Cait Shanahan’s voice sounds best hovering above sparse, acoustic arrangements, as on “Here” from her 2007 full-length In Season. But at the behest of a TV producer, Shanahan was forced to recruit a band in order to appear on a local program, which led to a frenzied round-up of her musical friends. Despite the unorthodox nature of its inception, The Girls (which is actually all dudes) stuck around, with the group currently working on a full-length album. And apart from some awkwardness on screechy, guitar-laden songs like “Paul’s Song,” the band does right by Shanahan’s voice by wisely letting it remain at center stage.
