Califone adds symphonic layers to folk’s clichés with minimalist piano, tape loops, synthesizer drones, and drumming that sounds alternately manic or overly simplistic. 2009’s All My Friends Are Funeral Singers—the follow-up to the band’s critically acclaimed 2006 release, Roots & Crowns—features these elevating traits while telling the story of a psychic woman trying to exorcise ghosts from her secluded home in the woods.
