Cash Box Kings
Cash Box Kings don’t mistake “Chicago blues” for “blues played loud just because.” The band’s newest album, I-94 Blues, boasts Kenny Smith’s swinging drums, Joe Nosek’s warm harmonica-honking, and a delightfully hokey sense of down-and-out humor. Chicago pianist Barrelhouse Chuck piles extra, well, boogie onto several tracks, including opener “Default Boogie” and “Quesadilla Boogie.” Billy Flynn and Joel Paterson’s guitar leads tip in favor of rockabilly plucking over cheesy wah-wah screams. Even a cover of Jim Croce’s “You Don’t Mess Around With Jim” perfectly suits the band’s mix of playful and earthy.
