Chikita Violenta

Broken Social Scene has produced enough successful side projects and solo works to be a sort of indie-rock farm team; with BSS member-producer David Newfeld again helming its new album, add Chikita Violenta to the lineup. The Mexico City quartet’s third full-length album, TRE3S, recalls the panoramic lo-fi pop that made BSS so initially alluring: layers of intricately woven harmonies, racing percussion, and heavily affected guitars. But Newfeld’s loaned-out tricks are judiciously arranged, letting the band’s own personality ultimately shine through, from the thunderous opener, “Roni,” to the soaring group sing-along of the victory lap, “My Connection.”
