Chris Bathgate
Listening to the rise and fall of Chris Bathgate’s voice, it’s difficult not to hear a reflection of the sad decline and stumbling rebirth of Michigan itself. But the Ann Arbor singer-songwriter is no Great Recession miserablist, and his new Salt Year is far from a document of musical ruin porn. Bathgate’s is an intimate, small-scale Americana, which finds its bruised beauty in everyday images and occurrences—on “Fur Curled On The Sad Road,” he even makes roadkill sound poignant. Live, Bathgate substitutes looped guitar and vocal harmonies for the swatches of pedal steel, banjo, and violin that color Salt Year—an appropriately automated touch revealing the stark, bittersweet core of his original compositions.
