There’s no shame in the fact that Chris Mills started out in a long line of Chicago musicians amped on Uncle Tupelo and excited to get in with that rootsy sound. But as the now Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter’s new career retrospective, Heavy Years: 2000-2010, Mills has developed a comfort with adding bits of focused rock and orchestral pop to his alt-country bedrock while still leaving plenty of room for his densely written narratives on the everyday shittiness of life. It’s safe to call Heavy a stopgap rather than resting on laurels, since Mills is already at work on a new album tentatively titledThe Soldier Is The Castle.
