“Finnegan is a stupid-sounding name,” comedian Christian Finnegan argues in his stand-up DVD, Au Contraire! But that’s about as self-deprecating as it gets. Like another comedian who got a boost from VH1’s Best Week Ever, Paul F. Tompkins, Finnegan traffics in a dapper, engagingly obnoxious stage persona. So far, his arch dissections of the oddities of everyday life (dance clubs with weird names, how relationships compare to yard sales) have been based in pretty familiar territory, but he puts mischievous and snappy 21st-century twists on them. Finnegan’s new TV gig as a cast member on TBS’ middling new sitcom Are We There Yet? could damage his credibility, but limited screen time means he’ll probably escape unscathed with a well-deserved paycheck.
