Artist Chrysta Bell

That Chrysta Bell’s forthcoming Strange Darling is executive produced by David Lynch makes perfect sense: The striking, otherworldly chanteuse (and former 8 1/2 Souvenirs frontwoman) has always seemed as though she stepped out of one of Lynch’s hypnagogic hallucinations, like Eraserhead’s “Lady In The Radiator” in platform heels, or a Parisian answer to Mulholland Drive’s Rebekah Del Rio. And of course, Bell made her own Lynchian debut in Inland Empire, soundtracking the film’s emotional climax with her haunting “Polish Poem,” a song she co-wrote with Lynch. Her first solo release floats in that same hazy realm between transcendence and unease, a collection of standard and obscure covers given a spellbinding redefinition that—like Lynch’s films—makes them feel both alien and oddly sensual.
