Over the past few years, emo has been undergoing a massive makeover. Fortunately for Chicagoans, specifically, the Midwest has become an incubator for young, engaging acts from this once overwrought genre. While many new bands are pulling influence from delicate and airy acts like American Football or Mineral, Cloud Mouth pummels with the fury of the long-lost Shotmaker, channeling everything from metal technicality to punk aggression while forging its own sound. Unfortunately, the band recently announced its untimely demise, saying its fall dates will be an “Irish funeral” of sorts. Considering Cloud Mouth attacks its live sets with reckless abandon, ripping apart a room and filling the void of powerful, confrontational music among so much recent simpering, these dates should be an apt end to an all too short career.
