Collections Of Colonies Of Bees
Times are good for Milwaukee post-rock instrumental outfit Collections Of Colonies Of Bees, who teamed up with good friend and indie-rock wunderkind Justin Vernon for 2009's widely acclaimed Volcano Choir record, Unmap. Those who were introduced to CoCoBees via Unmap might be surprised by how forceful (and dare we say “rocking”) the band is when it's not painting airy soundscapes with the dude from Bon Iver. Whipping up a hypnotic dissonance reminiscent of early Pink Floyd, 2008's Birds is esoteric, wonky rock ’n’ roll that still manages to plug into more primal impulses on long, winding instrumental tracks that burn slowly and brightly.
