Though the name seems to imply something heavy or, at the very least, grating, Oakland’s Cryptacize actually qualifies as a pretty-sounding outfit, and you can thank frontwoman Nedelle Torrisi for that. Not that the trio—which includes former Deerhoof member Chris Cohen, who admits that the name “means whatever you want it to mean”—doesn’t have some challenging ideas up its sleeve, but Torrisi’s sweetly executed vocals keep the whole project more on- than off-kilter.
