HOLIDAY SALE AT THE ONION STORE

Artist Dale Watson

Alabama-born, Texas-bred Dale Watson plays old-school truck-stop country music without glossy studio effects, goofy wordplay, or foolish irony; any time he plays, expect simple, hard-boiled honky-tonk songs about trucking, beer, bars, and women. His 2007 album, From The Cradle To The Grave, is a minimalist collection of hollow Americana that reverberates with the soul of Johnny Cash—not too surprising, considering it was recorded in a cabin Cash once owned. After switching things up a bit with 2008’s full-fledged, independently released gospel record Help Your Lord, Watson returned to his bread and butter with both 2009’s The Truckin’ Sessions Vol. 2, his second collection of original tunes all related to the big-rig lifestyle, and last year’s honky-tonking throwback, Carryin’ On.
