Dan Friel

If Dan Friel’s main band, Parts & Labor, perches precariously at the nexus of anthemic rock and somebody’s hazy idea of video games, then his solo work falls squarely on the side of Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, and Asteroids. The veteran tinkerer trades in the kind of squiggles, bleeps, and hisses made popular (and palatable) by bands like Battles, Oneida, and the late, great Hockey Night, but Friel orients his sound toward constant climaxes and electronic explosions, all the better for the late-night dance parties at which these tunes are best appreciated.
