Dark Dark Dark
Dark Dark Dark’s charcoal-dusted chamber pop conjures images of bleak, sunless street scenes in Victorian London. The bounce of the band’s Eastern European influences, from Nona Marie Invie’s Regina Spektor-like voice to the squeeze boxes driving jaunty numbers like “Celebrate,” off 2010’s Wild Go, help to brighten the ghosts of history that haunt its songbook. But DDD’s at its best when light drumming and gently buzzing strings create a subtle backdrop for Invie’s heartbreaking piano and tear-stained vocals to sing the sorrow on the exquisite “Daydreaming.”
