Dark Meat
Psych-rock collective Dark Meat has become most famous for its connections with the Elephant 6 collective—as well as for its sheer size. The band, which sometimes includes as many as 20 people, has a sound that swells and swarms like a single-minded mob: Imagine The Rolling Stones pumped through Phil Spector’s "Wall Of Sound." Dark Meat piles on rock orchestration with gushes of clamorous percussion, chanting vocalists, swirls of symphonic backing, and sprinkles of bizarre instrumentation. This is all compressed into the band’s new album, Truce Opium, as well as 2006’s Universal Indians, but is brought to its true powers during live shows, when four guitarists and a six-piece horn section can surround the audience.
