HOLIDAY SALE AT THE ONION STORE

Artist Darwin Deez

With his sloppy mop of curls, rat-stache, and ill-fitting thrift-store wardrobe, Darwin Deez (né Darwin Smith) resembles an extra from a Jared and Jerusha Hess film. Thankfully, Deez’s self-titled debut is high on giddy, Napoleon Dynamite-style sugar-rush moments and low on affected,Gentleman Broncos grotesquerie. The album collects several simple, sweet songs about love, outer space, and evading the cops—the last two of which are merely metaphors for love in the Deez songbook. The blasé delivery, angular New Wave jangle, and lyrical naïveté of Darwin Deez suggests a separate origin for its creator, though: conceived during a Brooklyn tryst between The Strokes and The Moldy Peaches in 2001, born fully grown (and barely mature) in the U.S. 10 years later.
