David Allan Coe
Walk into any bar in the boonies, cue up David Allan Coe’s “You Never Even Called Me By My Name” on the jukebox, and you’ll be arm-in-arm with flannel-shirted strangers in no time. One of the original stars of the “outlaw” country movement, Coe doesn’t have the hip cachet of Willie Nelson or Waylon Jennings, but he remains a favorite of hard-drinking rural folk. The prodigiously bearded singer-songwriter is still on the road playing out-of-the-way roadhouses even now that he’s in his 70s, but he’s (mostly) no worse for wear, bashing out originals like “Would You Lay With Me (In A Field Of Stone)” and “Take This Job And Shove It” for appreciative audiences across the country.
