While bassist Satomi Matsuzaki’s chirpy vocal melodies define Deerhoof’s sound for many, that’s just one (crucial) part of the San Francisco group’s insidiously smart marriage of whimsical pop and experimental aggression. Drummer-songwriter Greg Saunier’s vision, combined with some extra dual-guitar power, makes for some of the band’s most powerful songs yet on the 2008 album Offend Maggie: Sure, the lyrics still run in oddball free-verse circles, but Deerhoof can harness old-fashioned guitar riffs as mightily as any classic-rock-revival act out there. Whether rocking straight ahead or plunging into a fractured free-for-all, Deerhoof’s live sets thrive on gleeful loudness and a good amount of experience messing with and delighting people’s ears.
