Del Rey
Last decade, the instrumental rock genre boomed, spawning plenty of middling acts and only a few that really shine. Participants in the genre must develop a distinct sound quick or they’re going to be lost in the shuffle. After all, there’s no unique vocalist or trippy lyricist to stick out and make a scene. Unfortunately, Chicago band Del Rey does little to distinguish itself from gold standards Explosions In The Sky or Mogwai. Some of Del Rey’s tracks have cool moments, but the vast majority are easily forgettable. That being said, there’s an audience for these acts, throwaway or not. Maybe it’s time for some more bands to throw their names in the instrumental hat to spice this snoozefest of a scene up a little bit.
