Delta Spirit
Delta Spirit rides atop a wave of indie bands playing sweaty, energetic revival country that occasionally takes on a gospel aesthetic. 2008’s Ode To Sunshinewas a muggy, stomping, piano-pounding blast, alternately bellowing with soul (“People, Turn Around”) and rolling along at its own grooving, clickety-clack clip (“Trashcan”). It was 100-percent earnest and 100-percent compelling, which is probably why everyone from Dr. Dog to Cold War Kids have taken the group on tour. Despite losing a guitarist prior to recording History From Below, the latest album actually sounds bigger and more ambitious, as on the eight-minute time signature-shifting “Ballad Of Vitaly.” 2010 also saw the release of the band’s The Waits Room EP, a collection of songs recorded live at Prairie Sun Studios.
