A.V. Club: Best of the Decade

Artist Demetri Martin

  • 1

Comedian Demetri Martin’s shaggy bowl cut and penchant for striped sweaters has always tied in well with his material: simple-seeming jokes that typically involve crudely drawn overhead slides or guitar-strummed songs, pointing out the illogical nature of the world. (“Swimming is a confusing sport because sometimes you do it for fun and other times you do it to not die.”) In recent years, Martin has released two comedy albums and a live DVD (Demetri Martin. Person.), in addition to holding a recurring post as Youth Correspondent on The Daily Show. His star continues to rise in 2009: He stars in Ang Lee’s movie Taking Woodstock, as well as the Jon Stewart-produced Comedy Central stand-up and sketch show Important Things With Demetri Martin.
