While not necessarily the first to play it or the sole driving force behind its aesthetic development, Derrick May was the primary figure who gave techno the emotional ballast it needed to sweep the world and spawn one of the most vital cultural tide-shifts since the ’60s. He’s had a tangled relationship with the rave scene that sprouted up around his music, deriding giddy early rave anthems as shameless bastardizations of Detroit’s purist form of post-soul. But that’s what he got for making songs as stirring as “Strings Of Life.” May is still known to bang it out as a DJ.
