Devin The Dude is the everyman of hip-hop: a criminally underappreciated rapper whose rhymes focus not on the trappings of success, but rather on the numerous small indignities that get in the way of a good time. Perhaps most notable for synecdochic references to marijuana—past songs have highlighted missing rolling papers (“Nothin’ To Roll With”) and a missing blunt (“Doobie Ashtray”)—Devin’s oeuvre and the honest, easygoing sentiment behind it remain relatable to anyone who’s ever had a day that didn’t end with unlimited Cristal. Devin’s 2008 full-length Landing Gear finds the Dude in fine form, and boasts Snoop Dogg’s second guest spot in one of his songs.
