Devin The Dude is the everyman of hip-hop: He’s an underappreciated rapper whose rhymes focus not on the trappings of success, but rather on the small indignities hindering a good time. Most notable for synecdochic references to marijuana—past songs have highlighted missing rolling papers (“Nothin’ To Roll With”) and a missing blunt (“Doobie Ashtray”)—Devin’s oeuvre and the honest, easygoing sentiment behind it remain relatable to anyone who’s ever had a day that didn’t end with unlimited Cristal. Forever breaking “lazy stoner” stereotypes, Devin followed his dual 2010 releases—Suite #420 and Gotta Be Me—with 2011’s Fresh Brew, a mix-tape showcasing his Coughee Brothaz crew, minimal production styles, and what must be the finest weed in the greater Houston area.
