DM Stith
David Michael Stith’s wide-ranging folk is mannered but wild—a little bit Devendra Banhart and little bit more Sufjan Stevens. The latter signed Stith to his Asthmatic Kitty label and released his full-length debut, Heavy Ghost, which swoons, stomps, and meanders in equal measure. Some songs are intimate, giving the impression that Stith is whispering into your ear. But many others assume odd orchestral poses—think Tom Waits making field recordings in a forest—and tangle themselves up in off-kilter juxtapositions before coalescing into something big, cathartic, and generally pretty winning. On the new double-disc compilation Heavy Ghost Appendices, Stith collects a year's worth of B-sides, remixes, and rough drafts while also channeling his warmth into unexpected covers of artists like Randy Newman and The Ronettes.
