Before it was turned into a star-studded film that earned Jennifer Hudson an Oscar and Eddie Murphy a mulligan forThe Adventures Of Pluto Nash (but not Norbit), Dreamgirlswas a Tony-winning musical inspired by the real-life rags-to-riches show-biz tales of The Supremes, Jackie Wilson, and other soul stars of the ’60s. The original Broadway production played for nearly four years in the early ’80s and spawned the No. 1 R&B hit “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” by Jennifer Holliday in 1982. (The song was memorably performed by Hudson in the film version.) This national tour is the first for Dreamgirls since 1983, and was launched in November with a one-month run at the Apollo Theater.
