Early Man
Early Man plays retro-minded metal that isn’t original by any stretch, wailing and crushing with an unabashedly Ozzy-aping vocal howl. But that seems to be the point: The band’s early albums perfectly distilled the kind of ’70s and ’80s heavy metal played by Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, and Judas Priest, while the recent Death Potion follows a more thrash-based track. The lyrics stick to familiar subjects like war, suicide, and killing, but the title track and lead single, “Someone Else’s Nightmare,” pummels and riffs like vintage Metallica, with frontman Mike Conte trading on staccato barks and guttural pronouncements of pestilence.
