Earth, the Seattle doom-metal band led by Dylan Carlson, ventures deeper into lavish but minimalist Americana sonics that glisten with the slow-moving percussion of Adrienne Davies and Carlson’s twangy guitars on their newest Southern Lord LP,Angels Of Darkness, Demons Of Light. Building onThe Bees Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull, the band’s sound has once again evolved, now realizing orchestral grandeur through the flowing cello work of Lori Goldston. From sludgy drone to Black Sabbath-style metal, the quartet has gradually transformed into a sophisticated small ensemble that articulates a fresh, beautiful, and at times horrifying vision of the sprawling Southwest landscape. In 100 years, humans will be referring to this not as metal, but classical music.
