If you have a deep love for circuses but detest the sprawling three-ring aspect of them, then El Circo Cheapo might be the ideal alternative: It’s an entire circus contained within a single loft, and at an affordable sawbuck to boot. Self-billed as a “poor man’s Cirque du Soleil,” ECC backs that up with acrobats, clowns, and yes, freak shows, all milling about and entertaining in a manageable performance space at this monthly event. It can be a crapshoot who performs—an audience “might see five silk acts from five different companies or… a 6-year-old Russian trapeze artist”—but the price is hard to beat. Plus, ECC deducts a buck off the admission cost for every pull-up you can do, so get training, tubby.
