Elizabeth And The Catapult
Elizabeth And The Catapult play a homey kind of jazzy pop that sounds equally comfortable in the realm of indie-pop and in the sphere of Verve, the storied old jazz label that pulled the group onto its roster for its 2009 debut. That album, Taller Children, flits through sounds that slot in as “lounge” and traffic within the bewitching vocals of Elizabeth Ziman, taking inspiration from her time backing jazz great Patti Austin. Ziman’s percussive piano work and darker lyrical material add some edge to 2010’s ballad-heavy Other Side Of Zero, aided by the dynamic orchestration from guitarist Pete Lalish and drummer Dan Moland, particularly on the awesomely Spoon-like opener, “(Time) We All Fall Down.”
