Ellen Allien
German producer Ellen Allien is also a fashion designer, runs record label BPitch Control, and squeezes in time to DJ. Somewhere in there, she also curates and releases some of the most compelling retrofit electro around, while she dishes out some of her own at an impressive clip. Rooted in the gurgle and buzz of new-wave pop—but slanted toward the future—Allien's albums (save 2008's more minimal, ambient Sool) twist fruitful dance-floor grooves into something more fractured and jarring. The new Dust has been self-described by Allien as having a "warm immediacy" compared to her past work, and that's evident in its emphasis on melody and more organic instrumentation.
