It’s strange that Jesus—lamb of God, embodiment of peace—inspires bands like South Carolina’s Emery to make some of the least peaceful music around, but apparently when you’re singing Christ’s praises, it helps if you scream them unintelligibly. Like most modern screamo bands, the group balances post-hardcore yelping and jagged guitar breakdowns with quiet, reflective moments of melodic crooning on 2009’s …In Shallow Seas We Sail—as well as the upcoming We Do What We Want, presumably—but it’s still loud and heavy-handed enough to resurrect the dead.
