A.V. Club: Best of the Decade

Artist Enon

  • Emily Wilson
Erstwhile band Brainiac’s star was on the rise when singer Tim Taylor died in a 1997 car accident, but guitarist John Schmersal carried on the torch with his follow-up band, Enon. The newer group (which came together with members of Skeleton Key and Blonde Redhead) doesn’t have too much in common with Brainiac, but its distinctive electro-punk offers pleasures of its own. The band’s fifth album, 2007's Grass Geysers… Carbon Clouds, dropped a lot of the plunky electronic weirdness the group was known for, but it also favored tighter songwriting that makes Enon easier to digest.
