Artist Erik Brandt And The Urban Hillbilly Quartet
St. Paul's Erik Brandt And The Urban Hillbilly Quartet boasts one of the sturdier voices among the Midwest's country acts, writing songs in a fairly traditional style but arranging them with a pristine finish that takes in glimmers of Eastern European folk and Western swing. Brandt traveled to a studio in Budapest, Hungary, to record his most recent album, 2008's Sometimes, with a crew of local musicians. They seem to have worked together quite naturally, judging by the playfully dark harmonies on "Get Into The Boat" and Miklos Szula's festive gypsy-jazz guitar leads on "Ain't Broke." While he was over there, Brandt even found time to think of us: The song "Madison" voices an affectionate frustration with his efforts to get close to the city.
