A.V. Club: Best of the Decade

Artist Extra Golden

  • Noel Kupersmith
Extra Golden began on a whim in Africa. Ian Eagleson was studying Kenyan music for an ethnomusicology doctorate when he met Otieno Jagwasi and Onyango Wuod Omari, of Orchestra Extra Solar Africa, in Nairobi. They were eventually joined by Eagelson’s longtime Golden bandmate Alex Minoff. The two pairs traded notes, played a restaurant gig as Extra Golden (which they recorded), and walked away with a raw, gorgeous album in 2006’s Ok-Oyot System. Tragically, Jagwasi, whose impossibly rich voice coated nearly every song, died of liver failure before the album was released. However, the remaining members picked up the pieces and soldiered on. Their latest, 2009's Thank You Very Quickly, is the band's third on the post-rock indie label Thrill Jockey.
