Artist Figureheads

Jeremy Bryan, one of the two MCs for Milwaukee hip-hop group Figureheads, sounds a bit like a teacher when he calls Figureheads’ adult audience “peers.” But that’s only because Bryan isn’t always playing to the grown-ups in the crowd. The group is committed to making credible hip-hop for children—it even has non-profit status, and frequently performs in schools for kindergartners through high-schoolers. The kid-orientedThe Movement from 2006 matches the urgency of the group’s previous adult EPs, Configurations and Life & Depth, but filters it through lyrics like “how come my homework don’t make sense?” For post-graduates, the group released Fire In The Soul in 2009.
