Film School
San Francisco’s Film School has increasingly displayed more craft and far less cheesy cheek than most bands reaching back to shoegaze and ’80s electro-pop. At times the band even manages to nudge those sounds forward a little and avoid repeating itself, spending much of 2010’s Fission in more upbeat territory than that of 2007’s Hideout or 2006’s self-titled album. Film School’s so comfortable inhabiting its influences that it often seems to lose its own identity in there, but the band’s attention to vocal hooks and prickly, shimmering guitar parts makes up for it.
