Madison's Fishhooks claim sailors and reggae among their chief influences, and that gradually begins to make sense as they lurch through five tracks recently posted as a Bandcamp download. Had some wayward seaman learned to skank for the first time on a rough trip through the Caribbean and then drunkenly unpacked his mind behind a boathouse, he might end up with the barren and uncomfortably funky likes of "Night Of Living Glass," which replaces squeezebox with melodica and piano, or the syncopated guitar scribbles and queasy vocals of "Bum-Biggidy." For such a dark and potentially confusing take on pop, the Fishhooks' output so far actually has some memorable heft to it, something to build on as the band tightens up and matures.
