Flojo

Milwaukee’s Flojo (pronounced “flow-ho”) may contain one-half of The Vega Star in its DNA, but don’t come expecting the latter’s take on dusky Americana. Instead, Flojo mixes up a concoction of heart-on-sleeve indie-folk and unexpected acoustic psychedelia, all topped off with reverb-drenched piano. It may not be the most novel of formulas, but it manages to be both winning and refreshing all the same. Singer Kurt Spielman makes for an intriguing frontman, and wields a smooth, agile voice on songs like “Time & Place,” while backup vocalist Sarah Gilbert proves herself to be the band’s secret weapon on the achingly gorgeous “China Doll, Voodoo Doll.”
