Floor

Much like its stoner/doom metal contemporaries in Sleep, Floor is almost more notable for what its members did after the band broke up—like founding vocalist-guitarist Steve Brooks, who has since rose to anthemic, club-leveling prominence fronting Torche. Before he mixed the hooky and the heavy with that band, Brooks did so to a far sloppier degree in Floor, burning through lineups and exploring subterranean depths unthought of by the drop-tuned masses. The reunited band’s entire recording archives were compiled for the massive, limited-edition box set Below And Beyond—but its slowness and lowness is better heard (and felt) live. Mammoth Grinder opens with songs that lumber like a prehistoric beasts and whir like mechanized blades.
