Free Energy
Philadelphia power-pop rockers Free Energy released their debut full-length, Stuck On Nothing, in 2010, but they had been buzzed-about for a year prior—that’s the benefit of signing to DFA Records and receiving the imprimatur of LCD Soundsystem mastermind James Murphy. Formed after the break-up of the Twin Cities band Hockey Night, Free Energy emerged with an eponymous track in 2009, an anthemic song with multiple solos, tight hooks, and the mission statement, “We are young and still alive.” That sentiment seems to sum up Stuck On Nothing, which bursts with hot guitar licks, the occasional cowbell, and the sonic muscle of early Cheap Trick—perfect for a night just cruising the town. After a split from DFA, the band has been prepping its soon-to-be-self-released LP Love Sign.
