Freedy Johnston
Freedy Johnston seems to have a lot of patience, sticking to simple, balanced sounds that prove handy vehicles for his thick stack of songs. His tunes survey the world from a serenely wise viewpoint, but they’re not bland, and his voice carries plenty of pure, welcoming melodies. This, coupled with Johnston’s unassuming persona and sense of humor, has equaled a recipe for consistency since he began putting out solo albums in 1990. The country-tinged Rain On The City, his first album of original material in eight years, was delayed both by perfectionism and a series of personal misfortune—the IRS, a bad breakup, the death of his father—but if anyone can turn sad stories into lovely, sad music, it's him.
