HOLIDAY SALE AT THE ONION STORE

Artist Freeway

Nearly a decade ago, Philly’s Freeway made his debut on Roc-A-Fella, working with the likes of Jay-Z, Kanye, Just Blaze, and Rick Ross (with whom he shares a stage namesake, by the way—notorious late-’70s trafficker “Freeway” Ricky Ross). After Roc-A-Fella’s implosion, a faith crisis and trip to Mecca, and a switch to indie-rap label Rhymesayers, he sounds more comfortable on last year’s lower-budget The Stimulus Package than he ever sounded rapping with Hova about buying expensive shit, no matter how great those earlier Just Blaze and Kanye beats sounded. “I’ve got 99 problems / but a beat is not my problem,” he says on the third track of Stimulus Package—and it’s true.
