Frog Eyes
The nearly incoherent poetic ramblings of Frog Eyes leader Carey Mercer—who bellows, shrieks, and rants his way across each slippery verse—may be the Victoria, BC band's most dramatic features, but the rock 'n' roll abandon of its live show really proves how fun it can be (while simultaneously unwieldy and terrifying). Instead of upstaging the band's live presence, Mercer's vocal eccentricities create space for soulful, accessible improvisation. That's something the band tried to show off on its latest album, Paul's Tomb: A Triumph, which thrives more than ever on Mercer and Ryan Beattie's scraggly yet pointedly tuneful guitar interplay.
