Fu Manchu
Not since the Ramones has there been a worthwhile band that required such a limited mental capacity to enjoy. Fu Manchu is about sludgy distortions, stomping rhythms, and not much else. The SoCal band’s shows follow the same principle, allowing anyone to tune in, turn on, and rock out unpretentiously. The band’s 10th studio album, 2009’s Signs Of Infinite Power, marks a stylistic plateau—but then doing anything other than heavy, riffing stoner rock would be going against the band’s own keep-it-simple philosophy. Fu Manchu stuck to that notion in 2010, dropping a slate of vinyl reissues and allowing Southern Lord to revisit the band’s early, punkier incarnation, the Melvins-and-Black Flag-inspired Virulence. This year saw the band release a “bootleg” covers album.
