Gabriel Kahane
Gabriel Kahane walks the blurred line between classical composition and cerebral pop, yielding to neither side while seeking innovative ways to synthesize the two tendencies. One project, Craigslistlieder, set eight anonymous Craigslist postings to a punchy piano score (sample lyric: “Must enjoy video games, must own a video game system!”), and last year’s self-titled debut album features lush orchestration, literate lyrics, and a young composer’s sense of play. The easiest comparison is Sufjan Stevens—the two musicians are also friends—but Kahane’s classical training shines through even his folksiest material.
