Gay Beast
Twin Cities trio Gay Beast plays spastic tunes for post-punks with short attention spans. On much of its latest album, To Smithereens, the band pits skittering guitar, skronking saxophone, and squirming organ lines against one another in a haphazard battle for attention where the winner is constantly shifting. But by album closer “Goodbye World,” they prove that they can mellow out, settling the horns and keyboards into a pattern whose precision and repetition is almost proggy. Gay Beast does chaos to a T, but it’s nice to know it has other tricks up its sleeve.
