If nothing else, George Lopez deserves recognition as perhaps the only Latino comic in decades not to resort to cheap stereotypes to get laughs—that, and the fact that he doesn’t steal other people’s material, puts him leagues ahead of “beaner” panderers like Carlos Mencia. Lopez’s act, based on his real-life experiences, feels as genuine—and family-friendly—as Bill Cosby’s, whether he’s talking about his twisted upbringing or going to a protest rally just for the good Mexican food. Lopez will be heading back to television this fall—he’s been scheduled to host his own late-night talk show on TBS.
