A.V. Club: Best of the Decade

Artist George Strait

A mega-star in the world of modern country, George Strait owned the charts for much of the ’80s and early ’90s, until his rule was usurped—or at least challenged—by Garth Brooks. He’s still a force to be reckoned with, of course, and the title of his 2004 greatest-hits compilation, 50 Number Ones, speaks volumes about his continuing command of the country charts. His 2008 album, Troubadour, added two more chart-toppers to his unflappable winning streak, “I Saw God Today,” and “River Of Love.” His success means Strait doesn’t have to play live unless he damn well feels like it.
